Walnuts May Promote Health By Changing Flora in the Gut.
Past studies have linked less bacterial diversity with obesity and other diseases like inflammatory bowel disease. Researchers have found that eating walnuts can increase the diversity of bacteria in the gut, which may suggest that walnuts can contribute to better health. Research leader Dr. Byerley notes, "Walnuts have been called a 'superfood' because they are rich in omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linoleic acid and fiber, and they contain one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants… Now, an additional superfood benefit of walnuts may be their beneficial changes to the gut microbiota."Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, July 2017
